Fret buzz on only 1 fret

Post  zsquad on Mon Feb 15, 2010 1:58 am

For whatever reason, whenever I play a note on the 6th fret on the E string of my bass, I always get fret buzz. All of my other frets are fine and don't consistently give off fret buzz, even the 6th fret on other strings. But I always get fret buzz at that one spot, and I can't figure out why. Any suggestions on what I should do?

How much have you been playing? It sounds like you need a new fret there. Frets get worn as you play, just move the string a little and take a close look, you should see it.
I have fret buzz on certain spots too, and pretty soon I'll need to change all my frets :S

Bring it to a local luthier/guitar repairperson you may just need one fret levelled. Its not unusual to have a fret that is high or low in one area.

You will need to get a small straight edge that spans of 3 frets and place it over frets 5, 6, and 7. If it rocks from side to side then one of the frets will be uneven. You will probably find that either fret 6 is low at the E string end or fret 7 is high. Do not attempt to file the frets, without the correct tools it is near impossible to shape the fret back into a useable form. If you file the top of a fret it becomes flat, frets need to be rounded (crowned) so that only a small part of the surface area of the fret comes in contact with the string when it is fretted. Leave fretwork to the professionals - or spend lots of money on fretfiles lol! .

I learned this the hard way Crying or Very sad

You could also try to raise the string height slightly until the buzz disappears.

Or decrease the neck tension by slackening the truss rod 1/4 of a turn.

I have been playing for about 4 months. I bought the bass used, but it was in great shape, pretty much like-new quality. As of right now, I don't know too many songs that have notes played on the 6th fret on the E string, so I'm fine for now geek
