well to stereotype the bass player it would generally be a submissive small guy in a rock type band or a big black guy in a funk band. Either way bass players are usually guys

Re: Introduce yourself!
In my experience if a girl is in a band she's usually a bass player and has patronizingly been given the 'easy' instrument

well that kinda sucks. i didn't choose bass because i was given the 'easy' instrument or because it was easy. actually it looks kind of hard or i'm just a really bad beginner?
i chose it because i like the sound of it and the versatility (can't spell). i also got inspired by the likes johnny christ and jeph howard (he's not amazing but still.) i don't like being thrown into the spotlight like guitarists and i was getting kinda sick of the amount of people who play guitar and not knowing anyone to play bass.
i kinda ranted on a bit there sorry

People think it's 'easy' because it has less strings and doesn't play chords (well, according to them it doesn't we all chord spam here XD) Plus in generic rock bands the bass player might only play like 5 notes in the entire song... This is probably why a lot of people don't play bass and the reason that there's a worldwide lack of bass players. Whether its hard or not at the beginning depends on your finger strength, dexterity and coordination you have before you first started playing... No such thing as a bad beginner, just the fact that everybody different.
Also, the most memorable riffs are usually basslines. When I was at some music night thing with loads of family friends and stuff that me and my guitarist were at along with other musicians, my guitarist played some riffs and people were like 'Thats nice' but when I played some 80s basslines people were like 'Thats [insert song here]!!! Wow, thats brilliant!!!'

Re: Introduce yourself!
Yea, people always remember the bass groove.
I know a wrote a rather long post about the guitar/bass difference and roles, but can't remember where. I'll just sum it up this time:
Bass is easy to learn, but hard to master. In most rock bands, the bass players are either unhappy about playing the bass or just lazy, so they play only the root notes like G-G-G-G-G-G-G-G then A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A and so on...
They never learn any finesse what so ever. To people who think bass players are just that, play them some RHCP or Iron Maiden (all be it the bass is hard to hear there). Those guys play standard simple lines and they evolve them through the song.
Another great example is Fool For Your Loving by Whitesnake. The bass is really loud and can be heard by anyone and although the guy could play just the root notes - he goes much much further.
Bass can be as simple as playing the root notes and still sound great . Later you can evolve it beyond and it's even better. It makes a good song sound much better.
Plus, a bass player has much more room to improvise and play around (show off ) than a guitarist does, even though hardly anyone notices it.
I could go on for days, but it's already become too long of a post

Re: Introduce yourself!
I've always loved the bass fills in 2 Minutes To Midnight. The song wouldn't be anywhere near as good if Steve had just gone with the whole root note thing.

Yep, as you can see we have a dedicated community with a lot of willing helpers, aka people who don't have anything better to do than show off their infinitely minor knowladge of bassdom (meaning myself of course ).
I'm also going to refrain from asking dante what exactly he meant by "getting to the bottom"

Too bad I just proved I'm not a saint
Anyway, don't worry I'm not going to get dirty or anything, nor was I confusing anything - I just enjoy the ambiguity that expressions (and language in general) offer

Re: Introduce yourself!
Hi!
I'm Chloe and I'm 17.
I finally got my hands on a cheap bass (Ovation Celebrity) a couple days ago, and I couldn't be more excited to learn how to use it. I've had a guitar (Tradition 'strat') for a couple years, but I had no burning desire to play it, so it sat in my room because I can't bring myself to get rid of a musical instrument. I've played the piano for about 14 years, and it's still my favourite instrument to play and listen to.
My favourite song of all time is Metallica's Hero of the Day. Metallica was the first band I listened to as a child and for about a year I wouldn't fall asleep if Enter Sandman wasn't playing. I probably thank my dad at least once a week for turning me into a metalhead at birth I enjoy listening to all kinds of music, but metal usually prevails.
I found Dman, like many others, through youtube and I really liked that he wasn't uptight about teaching bass, so here I am! I hope to learn a lot from the people here

Re: Introduce yourself!
hi, everyone! My name is Armo and i play the bass for six years and a little bit of guitar.
I'm sorry for my english but i'm from Italy. I could easily translate but i have many difficulties when i should talk.
But i think that if there are many good bassists over this forum i won't need to talk, just read, watch and, obviously, listen.
