Is this normal?

Post  Bass Mon on Mon Mar 22, 2010 10:22 pm

My E and sometimes my A string make sound by themselves I just did a test and only played the G string and my E and A string rang out. I doubt this is normal so any help on fixing it

Are you plucking the strings rather than striking them? Or striking them too hard?

Sounds like sympathetic vibration, most of the other strings will sound or ring out if they are not muted when you play other strings on the instrument. Once they start to ring on their own you might be getting a bit of feedback too that accentuates the note from the other strings.

This is because when you play a note you aren't just playing one pure note, there are lots of stray harmonics that sound at the same time that the ear doesn't pick up on ( and this is if all the other strings are muted too, that one note you are playing is made up of all sorts of frequencies otherwise it would sound dead like a pure tone on a tuning fork does ).

The other strings ring in sympathy with the other harmonics (eg if you have an E harmonic in the mix when you play the note on the G string then the open E string will sound in sympathy).

Lots of guitar makers have tried to combat sympathetic vibration in various ways - Ibanez for example on their Prestige Basses have individual bridges for each string so that they are physicaly seperated from each other except for their connection to the wood of the body of the guitar.

Am I waffling again? Embarassed

^ pretty much covers it. I find the physics of sound/music fascinating (yes i am a major nerd) so good job.

Or the short direct answer - As you pluck the lower strings, mute those above with your thumb Very Happy

It happens to everyone, even the pro's you can only minimize it to the best of your ability, if you anchor your thumb where you do so can help and if you don't then you shouldn't have any problem
