sliding your finger on the string

Post  MetalJacob on Tue Apr 13, 2010 10:07 pm

Everytime I slide my finger on the string, i always hear the sound of my finger going over the frets.I'm trying it for the first time in Dman's video of how to play Come Together by the Beatles.
And When I listen to Dman do it, no fret sounds, its fast and very smooth. How do I get that sound and not all the frets. Also, how do you know how fast to slide your finger and when u hit a note and slide up or down from that note,do you wait a second to hear the note or do you just automatically slide starting at that fret?

Sorry about all the newbie questions, Thanks in advance guys

P.S.Is there a way to make it hurt less?because my finger is sliding across the little ridges of the string.

Try not using so much pressure when you slide up or down to a note - only resuming normal fretting pressure when you get to the not you're headed to (although don't release the finger pressure altogether or you will simply damp the note and the sliding affect will not sound)

As far as the pain of sliding over those strings, don't worry - as your hand strength builds up so will the thicknes of the skin on your fingertips (of both hands in fact) so pressing down on the strings won't hurt as much eventually.

I've noticed that rather than getting calluses like I usd to get when playing acoustic guitar on the tips of my fingers, the skin of a large area of my fingertips of my fretting hand is simply getting thicker. I also have thicker skin now on my plucking hand too - not something I had while playing acoustic.

Hope this helps - it's a time and practice thing!

What he said.

And, in addition, different songs call for different times to initiate the slide. You'll just have to put your picky listening hat on to find out when.
