Fingers keep hitting the pick ups

Post  MetalJacob on Tue Apr 27, 2010 12:48 am

I try to keep my hand relaxed while I play but my fingers keep hitting the pickups when I play a string. Is there a special technique to finger walking or what?

You know the part on your finger that it looks like all the fingerprints circle into, from what i understand you should play above there. <- i hope that make sense Razz

If that isn't the issue maybe your pick-ups are too close to the strings, raise the action on the bass?(i don't know how else to fix that)

If you think your technique is correct then just lower the pickup height

Heres a simple example, as u can hear it sounds like my fingers are hitting the pickups which are making that sound in the amp.But I watch myself play and my fingers dont seem to touch the pick ups at all.Whats going on?

yeah i see what you mean

Do you play near the bridge??
If so then that might be the problem cause I do exactly the same thing if I play near the bridge.

What you can do is slightly angle you thumb so that when it rest on the Pups your fingers are not above them (if that makes sense)

If that doesnt work then just dont rest your thumb on the pups and play in between them resting you thumb on the E.

Ill upload a vid onto youtube so you see it better

hope it helps
my camera sucks so its a bit dark

I don't play near the bridge,I play directly above the pick ups.I tried what you said but it still makes the same sound.I moved my fingers near the bridge and played, same sound.Moved my fingers above the end of the fingerboard, same sound. And anywhere I play it, it seems to be making the same sound.

It wasn't making this sound a few days ago.
Any ideas to what would have affected it,if anything? This is very irritating >.<

try turning the volume on you amp up.

does the knocking sound also get louder?

If you can, go to your local music store and see if you can try out a high end bass.

If that sound is not there on that bass then its a problem with your bass and not your technique

Also if you can see if you can EQ the sound and see if it gets better or worse

I tried exactly what you did in the video and got the same sound :\ I'm very new to bass, and just got a cheap $100 one so I couldn't tell ya what type I have, sorry.I turned up the volume on the amp, the knocking did get louder. What do you mean by EQ the sound?

Also,while I was playing I noticed this:

That was just me playing open E, but is that extra rattling sound normal?

i think it may be fret buzz what your getting
like the string rattles against the frets

should help

secondly
it could be a problem with your electronics/the clicking sound could be peaking in your amp/pickups
I had that on my old amp so maybe try playing unplugged and is the clicking sound still there??

If yes then i dont think i can help you more and you shuld go and take your bass to a shop to get it set up

Also maybe some of the more experience members can help you out a bit and give you more suggestions on what it could be.

I dont think it is your technique

The knocking/clicking sound isn't there when I play unplugged.Obviously, the pick ups wouldn't make the sound without an amp, right? Is it possible my pick ups got unscrewed somehow? Cause as I said it didn't used to make this sound.I'm completely clueless here.

The unplugged thing was a test if its your technique or the electronics thats the problem.

As I said i think there may be peaking in part of the electronics. Probs your amp. See if you can play through a different amp somehow.

I had this problem too, but saw the vid about buzzing etc from dman and helped heck a lot. I reduced the pickup height also (be careful with that wood), it might help. Also as already said move your hand from there...!

Also try just to touch the string with the fingertip don't make it so deep so to touch the pickup.

My English suxx today. I hope I helped too!

I haven't gotten a chance to play with a different amp yet,but while I was playing a few seconds ago before I leave for church, I noticed a sort of clicking sound that did sound like it.I was playing without the amp.I'll get a recording of the sound later tonight when I get back, until then, if it is there while I play without an amp, is it my technique?

not necessarily

it could be that your a plucking to hard but most likely i think is that the bass is not set up properly

Okay sorry for not getting back to y'all.Anyways I've been playing alot more and notice the same sound, but I also noticed a little bit of rust on my strings by the bridge which I think might be causing the problem? The clicking sound is the same sound as if I play directly by the bridge.

Or could it be because I'm playing too hard? How do you play unplugged and still be able to hear it without playing "too hard"?
