Do you slap Flea style? It's basically exactly the same, except that you have your hand at a different angle. Just hold your hand the way you do normally slap and turn it so your thumb is parallel to the strings. Its the same thing I'm doing in my display picture. Then practice, practice, practice Smile Also you may find that you find popping a bit difficult in this position, you have to train yourself to use more of the side of your fingertip rather than the fingertip itself

is flea style the style taught by dman in his slap and pop videos? thats how i've learned. which method is more... precise? at least for beginners to slap? i have a 5 string and it gets kinda tricky sometimes to be accurate with slaps. i know accuracy will come with practice, but which method is easier for a beginner to pick up?

okay. another question about slapping on a 5 string: if i use the miller method, do i have my right hand "float" over the strings? or do i rest the lower part of my palm (kinda like where the thumb and palm meet, or the thumb muscle in the palm) on the string above where im slapping? at least where im at right now with my flea method, when i try to have my hand float about the strings, i often end up having the b string ring a little when i slap the e string. but when i rest my palm on the b string, my thumb sometimes come up far enough after a slap and the slap doesnt ring for as long as it should (i sort of do an unintentional muting of a ringing note). do i just have a technique problem?

I think you should be floating and then muting any ringing with your left hand. If you're slapping 100% accurately then having the strings vibrate a little is normal because when you slap all you're doing is basically whacking the string, so some of the vibrations will travel through the bridge and nut to the other strings. Just make sure you're muting properly

I've been slapping on a six string a lot recently, so I know where you're coming from with the whole accuracy issue. A lot less space in between strings. It's okay if you hit more than one, just make sure you're in a good position to mute the excess. This is why I preach the parallel method.

Can you still do the parallel method with flea style? I know some people do the strike through method, but I think it's more difficult....

That's exactly what we're talking about. Striking through is a slightly different technique (which allows you to use your thumb as a pick, basically). Personally, when I say 'slap' I mean hitting the string (at any angle), when I say 'thumbing' or 'double thumbing' I mean using the strike through method. It's good to lean both slapping and doublethumbing, and both techniques can be used with popping.

Take a close look at videos of Marcus Miller and Victor Wooten. Marcus slaps, Victor double thumbs
