Not meant to be an e-peen thread but just curious. Take a metronome and play sixteenth notes gradually moving up in bpm to determine.

Determine this using the basic scale on the frets?

I'm going to assume that I'm snail-paced but will play some more for actual numbers later.

I was thinking just one note. Generally, it'd be about the same.

Oh, good! I would have trouble playing a scale right now. This afternoon a cardboard box took a nice bite out of my left ring finger tip Sad The wound is bandaged and I'm hoping to still do some light playing tonight regardless!

Hmm... With a pick, I estimate only about 200BPM; with fingers, likely about 170. I can't test it out at the minute, but it'll be interesting to see how the estimates differ to what I can actually do.

I assume the unspoken rule is that we have to be able to do it as accurately as if we were doing 16ths at 110BPM Razz

Yes that is a rule Razz

So, here we go. No warm-up, 2 fingers, no fancy tricks, a straight 16th note pattern across several bars 130bpm. This much I think I can keep up indefinitely.
I have played songs where I went as far as 140, but that was not for longer than a single bar.

After warming up, adding a third finger, using a few tricks, adding movement etc, I can go faster, but that doesn't really matter. XD Since I haven't been in a situation where I needed to resort to any of that to attain the speed I need for a song. There aren't really that many songs with straight 16th notes that go over 120. It's all blurry beyond that.

Well, if you're on 170 or 200, that's 100 tops in 16ths Razz

Anyway, for general reference, Parallel Universe is 120ish in 16th notes, straight. That's damn painful to play with 2 fingers Shocked

120 is about what I can do as well. I guess everyone's about the same. This makes me sad.

100bpm indefinitely and comfortably, 110bpm indefinitely but with great effort, 120 for maybe 2 bars before slipping Razz

Pick is a similar story: 140, 150 and 160. I kept Stryfer's no fancy stuff or warm-ups rule Razz

It really makes me wonder how people do stuff like this.

Dman does his extremely fast too. Perhaps he needs to help us out with this.

It's the addition of a third finger, I think. And lots of very focused practice, building up strength and stamina. Lots and lots. Hours on end. For ages. Can't be arsed meself, I prefer to focus on making my grooves as grooviciously grooviably groovy as possible, 'cause that's the kinda bass-playing I enjoy the most. If I enjoyed going fast the most, I'd concentrate more on playing fast.

Flip-side to that is, of course, that I'll never have as many strings to my bow if I don't decide to practice playing fast lots. Dman has the most groovicious of the groovy groovy grooves AND can do the going fast stuff...

I know a dude who was a guitarist for years and picked up bass for one of my friend's bands. He's now playing the most technical of death metal you can imagine with fingers after only starting it a couple months ago. Sad

Same way people get sub-10 second solves on a Rubik's cube: practice.
I can get up to like 90 bpm consistently, up to 110 bpm for a few bars, and anything above that I can't get for more than one bar. Pick tops out at 185 or so before it starts getting messy and I start missing notes.

Playing fast is definitely not my thing.
