Yup and that's the only scale I know.I don't really know all the different types of scales or what to look up though.

Thank Smaz for that chart, the Ionian is the Major Scale and the Aeolian is the Minor Scale, I'd say: Try that one first.

It's simply the fingering pattern. Try the Major one, you'll notice that you fret the notes in the same order as in the chart, It works the Same for the Minor scale. So if you start on the root note, the white one, the next note in the minor Scale (called Aeolian here) is two notes lower on the same string, the 3th is the note below that and the 4th is on the next string right next to the root. Hope that that clears it up a little, though I expect not, I'm terrible at explaining such things.

Btw. when I said lower here I meant lower down on the string, not lower in pitch.

Yea that helped! Made me realize it wasn't shaped like left to right but was a fretboard standing up which was what confused me. Thanks!

I personally think that you're reading too far into it. Jamming comes naturally even if it's just route notes. If it's fun and it sounds decent then I don't see the problem. Most of my learning was done by making mistakes.

Yeah first time I jammed I didnt really know what would happen, I just looked at the guitarist at first and added little fills.

Then after awhile I just played whatever sounded good regardless of what chords the guitarist was playing. I asumed if it sounded good I was probably excecuting some kind of theory Smile

PS - My first jam was about 3 months after I started bass btw

Slightly off-topic, why is Lydian one of the happier modes? It looks like it's basically a minor scale with 2 extra notes...

Ah. What's Mixolydian, major 3rd and minor 7th? I think that sounds much nicer than Ionian, in C anyway.

Some advice for you Jacob

play as often as you can with others, it does not matter if you suck or dont know the song, so long as you are in time it will sound good, you will have fun and that is the goal of bass playing isnt it?

Having a good jam session with better players will release chemicals into your brain (endorphins they are called) and make you feel better about yourself and what you are doing.

I have only bee playing for 2 months and have never picked up an instrument before that. I am practicing every day, following a programme of learing 1 song per week, then each Wednesday I play with 2 guitarists and a drummer these guys have all been playing for 16 years, 35 years and 18 years respectively and are in the process of forming a cover band to play pubs etc. They dont care I miss notes etc, just bang away on the root note they say and you will get it.

The important thing with bass playing or indeed any playing is to have fun. Keep it up and you will see definate progress.

As for me the guys want me to learn particulay songs as they are gearing up to play the pub scene of a few months and guess what I am the bass player Shocked

It is also important to get some sun sunny as often as you can, this also helps with how you feel. Just remember to talk to others if you are feeling down or low, either us here or a trusted mentor, this helps not just with playing but with life.

Keep it up dude and rock on afro

Quite true.

Also, playing with others is one of the best things I know. If the people you play with are right, it doesn't matter how boring the song is, you just have fun. Good thing that you're allowed to make mistakes in a jam session. Wink

I've only ever jammed with a drummer once or twice, but I definitely know what y'all talking about with the magic.
