Hey there, I've been listening to A LOT of Weather Report and Jaco lately. Thought I'd share some of their stuff in case nobody has heard of them.

Also, if anyone knows how to the high pitched thing Jaco does in the beginning a tip on how to do them would awesome. Are they pinch harmonics?

Really talented band. Not really my style though and yes those are pinch harmonics. Try raising the volume of your bridge pickup and pluck the string while letting your thumb lightly touch it, make sure to move it away afterwards or you'll mute the note. Try to find the "sweet spot" for each note and just mess around with it. Theres probably a video tutorial with an explanation thats way better than mine.

Good luck!

Don't know about the playing, but you have good taste.
Birdland by Weather Report is one of my favorites too...

I found a video that shows how to do artificial harmonics or pinch harmonics. I watched a couple others, but this particular video seemed to be one of the better ones out there.

He does the Birdland Intro around 8:00, and after he uses the harmonics to make some pretty groovin' riff, check it out!

Oh, thanks Knackebrod for answering my question this video pretty much just allows me to see what you told me. Very Happy

That was really good video. I have seen Billy Sheehan doing stuff like that but never really understand how that stuff works with bass.
Must learn!

I love how Billy Sheehan does pinch harmonics during solos and such. The man is a machine. The trick to them is to let your middle finger grow a little bit of extra nail (if you keep them short), then use your nail to pick the note while holding your index and thumb together to dampen the note. Kind of hard to explain how I do actually. It works real nice through a loud amp with some sort of overdrive or distortion.
