Nah it isn't. A 5th string tends to add very little and spoil the looks of an instrument completely, though not really that bad with yours.

My bass' looks aren't spoiled at all. In fact I prefer the SR305's look to the SR300. There are certain basses I wouldn't put 5 strings on though, like a Thunderbird. That'd look awful. (edit: googled it. yep, awful.)

BTW nice bass David Very Happy

Looks very nice, David.

Also, Pippy, I was thinking a 5 string Thunderbird would be cool to have.

I hope that your usage of the past tense is the most significant part of that sentence Razz

As long as the neck wasn't huge and I could put a thinner one on it like an Ibanez or something (If that's possible) then I think it'd be awesome.

I dunno, putting 5 strings on a Thunderbird seems to me like putting a spoiler on a Ferrari 458 Italia.

edit: which, if you think about it, is almost exactly what lololiet said...

Tidy. I'm thinking of selling nearly all my basses to get a high end/custom jazz 5 string. Not fender though, they don't have beefy B strings if you get me. It has to be something extremely growly and in your face. Mike Lull etc..

I use mine all the time. Even if I didn't use it all the time I'd still get 5 string basses (I'd probably set them up as 4 string basses though, like Dman does/did) because I love the strings being closer together.

David, I told you so... Very Happy

But I personally just don't really see the appeal in a 5 string, But I'd also say: get the bass you like the most/think is the best, regardless of how many strings it has. Two good basses are two good basses, regardless of whether they're one 4string & one 5string, two 5strings, two 4strings ore even one 4string and one 12-string(yes, there are 12-string basses, and I want one)

well i play punk with a pick alot so the fifth string gets in the way sometimes, if i get a 4 string i can play punk easily and i can use the five string for other stuff that uses a five.

I'd like having a 5 string just so I could play drop D stuff without retuning, and so I could have an alternative to the open A. I tend to try not to play opens for some reason, I don't even know why. I just like the rounder sound of the fifth fret of a thicker string, I think.

Well I picked up a new bass yesterday, being a 1982 Fender Jazz Bass '62 Fullerton Reissue USA, needs a bit of work, replacing pickguard, bridge etc, and the previous owner changed the neck to be fretless (which is so cool), will upload pics when finsihed
