Strap Height
I need help figuring out where a should keep my bass at. If i have it to high it begins to hurt by back and if i have it to low i can reach all the frets properly Also i cant seem to find a comfortable spot in the middle.
I like to play with by bass more horizontal (if that makes any sense) rather than having it more vertical because when it is more vertical its harder to play with a pick (which i use a lot).
Any help?

Re: Strap Height
It's pretty hard to find a height that works for you, it depends on a lot of things, height, arm length, style of play, und so weiter, und so weiter. I have it a bit higher as you've in your picture, the knobs cover my, ehhm, vital parts, with the neck usually pretty horizontally. But best is to, I think, start really high and just gradually lowering down(or the other way around) till you find a spot that comfortable.
Or something like that.
It's just what works for you, Peter Quaife-style:
or like this
but most probably something inbetween

Re: Strap Height
When I set mine, I sat down and put the strap as high as it would go without my bass being lifted from my lap. Worked just fine, I think I had to lower it a tiny bit after that but I can't really remember.

Re: Strap Height
In my picture im holding my bass vertically, which is about the exact opposite of what i want. I used to play like that before i started getting into using a pick (i play alot of punk so the pick helps)

Re: Strap Height
I actually find it easier to play with a pick that way, for some reason. Maybe I'm just a bit weird

Re: Strap Height
I think i found a comfortable strap height, its about 3-4 inches more than what that guy has his at in pippys picture

Man that guy in the second pic has his down real low, I could never play like that.
It's funny when I was a youngster (god I'm so old when I can say things like that) and was just starting out I wanted to be all punk rock and have my bass down real low, but my strap wasn't long enough so I tied shoelaces around the end of the strap to my bass. Ultra low lol.
I used to wear it ultra high up like John Entwistle, I wear it slightly lower now and it did take me awhile to find that perfect fit.

Re: Strap Height
The Ox usually didn't have his bass that extraordinarily high, did he?
In fact The Who, Pete mainly, are credited as the first to actually lower their straps to beyond the practically necessary and thus creating the modern standard for rockband-looks. If you look up early videos of The Beatles, Stones, Kinks e.d, they'll all have their guitars & basses high up. And some, like Peter Quaife, kept that look too.
Something else Zep didn't invent...., I know, I know, I'll stop
