Gig Pain Empty Gig Pain

Not the type when youplay badly, I am talking about the stress and strain, causing pain from playing a long gig, with short breaks.

My band played a gig on Saturday at a local pub, everything went off well, but about halfway through the first set, my wrist was killing me, fretting hand, like a dull ache getting worse as the set wore on. We had the break I strapped the wrist up and carried on. Later on after another hour of playing my back and neck were also in pain ..... could it be that i am just getting old?... Anyway my question is how do you deal with the pain? Do you have any suggestions to minmise or get rid of it altogether? Or is it as suggested old age? Or did we just play way too long (5 hours)

Your advice, comments, or whatever is welcolme.

BTW I always warm up using d-mans method.

Cheers

I don't know for sure, but I'd recommend laying off the bass-playing a little and spending a bit of time with ice packs strapped to your wrists somehow. I got dull aches a while back too. Not just while I was playing, either. So I stopped playing for a few days, wrapped up some ice in a flannel and kept it pressed to my wrists for about an hour. Nothing's troubled me since.

Well, it can be the weight of the bass on your shoulder, in which case you should consider sitting down on occasion while playing.

A 5 hour gig is long and you need to be in good shape for that. Depends on how much you play in general. It's like a sport, the more often you "train" the more your stamina builds up.

Finally, if it's a long gig, I tend to do a full body stretching exercise. However, I tend to move and jump around the stage a lot. You probably don't need to if you're just stading in place.
