hello everybody,

I have been playing bass for around 7 months now i'am getting the hang of it. the only thing is that i find it difficult to play dead notes in songs especially in songs where you need to slap,I lose the sense of rhythm when I try to play them. usually if possible I try to avoid playing them. does anyone have some tips

thanks in advance

Don't let your fretting hand judge the rhythm. It's only there for the sake of choosing notes (unless your tapping).

Trying playing only dead notes for a while to get used to it.
Here's a little exercise I used to do. I put on a drum loop, hold down a note (any note at all) and come up with a rhythm using just my plucking hand. I don't move the fretting hand at all.
Then once I get a good groove down with just the one note, I start adding dead notes in between, by slightly lifting the finger off the note and briging it back down as needed.

Also, some dead notes are palm mutes, rather than dampening the string and playing the note. This is usually the case with slapping.
Again it takes practice, so here's an exercise. Start by slapping an empty string with, say straight fourth notes (like 1-2-3-4-2-2-3-4). Then, once you got the pulse down, starting adding a palm mute in between each slap. (this is done by briging your whole fretting hand down hard on the strings and keeping it there so that it creates a dead sound)
If you count 1-and-2-and-3-and-4-and ... so on. Then the palm mute comes on the "and".
When you get comfertable you can mix up the pattern.

Remember to start slow! This is something that needs to get inside your system first.
