Have I developed a bad habit?
Okay so when I switch strings I notice that I almost always use my index when I change to a new string.
Example:
I I R I M I R I R
------------------------5--7---------------------
-----------------4--7----------------------------
----------3--5-----------------------------------
---2--5------------------------------------------
-3----------------------------------------------
Now it's not ALWAYS like this, but I've noticed myself doing it a lot. Sometimes the 4th and the 8th notes of said pattern will be my middle.
Is this a bad habit?

Yea it is a bad habit, it will make your technique really sloppy when you try to play a fast phrase.
I've also noticed that you didn't list using your pinky.
If you're playing that pattern here's two patterns that would work fairly well:
M I P M P I P M P - this pattern means you will only shift your hand once, but it requires more finger work
M I P I P(M) I P I(M) P - this pattern felt more natural, but it also demanded more hand shifting.

I suppose I should have cleared this up, I meant on my plucking hand, not fretting hand.

Whoooooops
Sorry man.
I alternate when I play that particular sequence, but I have found some situations where it's better to use your index finger twice in a row like that. Mostly it depends on the rhythm.
As long it sounds clean it's good

Re: Have I developed a bad habit?
I wouldnt worry about that myself either. I don't alternate all the time, as a rule i do, but sometimes i'll double my middle finger. Tends to be a groove thing, it works out smooth like that sometimes. I'm not to anal about my right hand, finger technique on that came naturally to me, it was the left I had to work on.

Re: Have I developed a bad habit?
Well will it affect speed, is my real question. I expect to get at an Alex Webster or Mike Flores level of speed.

Re: Have I developed a bad habit?
In that case, yes it will affect speed!
If you're going for that level of speed you need to constantly be alternating otherwise the moment you play with the same finger twice is the moment your hand cramps up.
I did find a cool video once that gave a very good exercise for moving across strings with 3 figners and alternating them all the time. If I find it I'll post it.
EDIT: Found it

It's not much, but it's a good exercise.

Re: Have I developed a bad habit?
Alright thanks! I suppose that will be a good exercise if I do the same right hand technique that he does. Is that guy gay?
And I'll bust out my metronome and do some drills I suppose.

Re: Have I developed a bad habit?
That's a good idea for building speed, I never thought to use just a metronome

Yea man, don't worry about that one at all.
The shift in technique is so slight, you won't notice.

Re: Have I developed a bad habit?
Actually, yea. Looking at it, it is a bit odd. I read it wrong first time round.
My problem is that you go from index to index on the first two notes. I'd recommend going middle to index straight away.

Re: Have I developed a bad habit?
I think my problem is, when I play with three fingers, (which is always) I start with my index instead of ring so my pattern is actually IRMIRMIRM.

Re: Have I developed a bad habit?
I don't think it matters what you start with as long as you keep a constant alternating pattern
Stryfer
Re: Have I developed a bad habit?
Yup. Which I'll have to practice. But it seems that every time I'd switch to a new string, I'd restart the pattern is what I was saying.
