I guess I'm a bit late in informing you all of my youtube channel. Ive been doing covers periodically for about..... a year or so now, so i figured i should probably put it on here sometime. And yes, the covers are mostly Rise Against covers but I do have one or two covers from other bands. Keep in mind that these are not the best qualilty videos as i have no real means of "professionally" recording anything. I have a camera (not even mine, its my brother's) and thats it. Also, constructive critizism is welcome!

So I started writing a video-by-video comment post, but after listening to your latest cover I erased it XD There's a huge difference between the last video (maybe last 2) and the ones before, so some of my comments on the older covers would probably be redundant by now.

First off, I really like the sound! It's my kind of thing Smile One thing I've noticed - there's quite an inconsistency in accents when you're playing. Be it with fingers or a pick, you have to get control over that click in the attack. When it's a background bass type of sound this is isn't as important, but with a bright metalic sound it makes a huge difference. You have to make sure that it clicks when you want it to and not when you don't want to. It's all about how you pluck the string, feel around for the difference.

It seems like you get bored in the middle of a song compared to when you start playing. Maybe it's just me, but even in your latest cover I pick up a letdown in energy as the video progresses.

Also, I'm not a fan of the way you hold you neck, but maybe it works and I'm stuck in my ways. I don't know, it's just feels like keeping the thumb on top of the neck would be incovenient when doing scale patterns. I think I've even noticed you changing that position when you play more than a single note.

Your groove is steadily improving so just keep at it, you can still make it much tighter! I like how you add that dead click at the pause in a phrase, really funky! I also like that you added strum, but it's a bit off rhythmically and dynamically. It's so much louder than everything you did up until then that it feels unnatural. It takes a long time to get the dynamics under control. As for the rhythm, I'm sure it'll improve as you keep going (just it has been improving through the videos).

Thanks for the advice man! Ill try and work on the stuff you mentioned, and maybe put up a new video soon. Very Happy \

EDIT:
How do I get rid of the clicking? It seems that unless I completely alter my playing style, it still clicks.

Well I do one of two things with my fingers:

To not click I turn my wrist so that my fingers are at almost a 90 degree angle to my bass. Then, when plucking I make sure my finger strokes the string, as in touches it then pulls it upward. It's gently plucked I guess... This way it doesn't click so much or it's barely audible.

To make it click, I position my wrist so that my fingers are at an angle that's close to being parallel with the bass. For the plucking motion, instead of having the finger touch the string and pull on it, I just bring it down and hit it across the string, like a slap.

This way I get a nice difference where the click is either really pronounced when I need it to be, or almost non-existant and unnoticable. Some songs I play all the way with the click.
In that one cover you did... I wanna be sedated, the click is very unnoticable. Live, that won't be heared so it's good. Just check what you were doing and perhaps perfect it a bit. While in that last cover it really clicked a lot and it was so cool! Smile Check your technique with both songs when you play them, or the difference when you're standing up and sitting down. It's a game of find the difference Very Happy

EDIT: the tricky part comes when you want to make one note click and then one soft, or other combinations within a single riff.

EDIT 2: Looking at I wanna be sedated and Rockstar of a day, I'm noticing that your wrist is much more bent when you're sitting down as opposed to playing while standing. So I'm guessing that made the difference. It's the same with me - bent wrist for softer notes and straight for the click.

the way you described how to get the clicky sound is exactly how i usually play. Very Happy
Also, i think part of the reason why the click was less noticable in I Wanna Be Sedated was because that was the first/only time i actually hooked my bass up to my computer.
Before I read this post I kinda half-figured out the technique to not click the strings, but its still kinda akward playing like that. I guess it will come with time and practice. Thanks alot for the advice man! cheers

Anytime man Smile
I was a clicker from the start, but my bass teacher told me learn to not click as well... I was annoyed by that at first, but later figured out that it's actually useful XD
