Tips for Learning Note Positions?

Does anyone have any tricks and tips for learning positions of the notes? Should I try to memorize all the notes on the fretboard first before moving on with the lesson tree? Thanks!

And no, you should not wait to learn all the notes before you move on. Mine just came with time, to be honest.

I would advise to focus on the first 5, once you know those the rest will be a bit more easy, and you traditionally use those the most.

The long term memory is a bit of a bastard, to be honest. It only takes things in when it wants to, and it generally doesn't at all after about 20 minutes of focused concentration, on average. You can't make the long term memory do anything; it'll learn where all the notes are in its own time. Learning is best done semi-passively, with a sort of carefree attitude towards it. You have to trick your brain into thinking it's not learning. You're not learning which notes are where on the fretboard; you're enjoying a bit of a jam on the bass, with a bit of note identification on the side.

Best thing to do is to constantly try and be aware of which notes you're playing. Try to stop thinking of notes as "7th fret on the E string", or "4 on the G", or "14 on the A", or "16 on the G", or "9 on the D". Instead, think of them as B, B, B, B and B. If ever someone asks you what you're playing, don't answer them with fret numbers.

It's fine if you have to stop and think, or sort of 'arrive' at the note. For example, say you were playing the 3rd fret on the D string: you know that the open note on the D string is D, so the first fret must be D#, so the second must be E, so the third must be F.

When you get more advanced, you can stick numbers after the note to show which octaves you're playing. Basses are tuned E1, A1, D2, G2 (Low B strings are tuned B0, high C strings are tuned C3). The number changes when it reaches a C. This means that the second fret on the A string is B1, and the third fret is C2. Of course, you don't have to worry about all this at all. Nobody else does, so it might seem like wasted effort (not that it should feel like effort!) learning all those numbered octaves and then having nobody else knowing what you're on about, but I reckon there's no such thing as too much knowledge

In order, all those Bs up there are: B1, B2, B2, B3, B2.

If you ever get into reading music notation, bass parts are notated E2, A2, D3, G3. Don't know why. I can't read music

Actually, octaves aren't too important. It would be more important to let them know what scale you're in. Any musician educated enough to understand octave numbers, probably knows which octaves the bass notes are in

As for what lololiet said - which frets/notes to focus on first? I found that, apart from learning the strings, the most important ones were the 2nd fret, 3rd fret, 5th, 7th and 12th (but this last one is the octave so it's the same note)
These I've used the most often and if I know them, I'll know almost every note on the bass since it's just half a step away.
If the 3rd fret of the A is a C, then finding a C# should be easy.
It would probably also be a good idea to memorize the 9th and/or 10th fret note, but I haven't used them enough as a root to remember it (only for improvization).

I know they're not that important, that's why I put 'you don't have to worry about this at all' in bold .
