Sing and play
Been playing for about 2 years now. The first song I learned was Stand by Me (thanks Dman).
I can play this song without thinking about it or looking at my fret board. But I can not sing the song, talk, or put to much brain power into anything else while playing.
I keep trying but if I so much as try to hum to the lyrics I play like someone having a seizure. And I cant sing while playing either.... by this I mean I miss time lyrics and miss words (its weird).
I can play the song, I can sing the song, but if I try to both I can do neither.
Any simple exercises I can do to help split my brain in 2?
I thought Stand by Me was a simple enough song to try to learn to sing to but its not happening.
Thanks for any advise.

Re: Sing and play
Hi Todd!
I've been playing off on for 8 years now and only recently have I managed to sing and play (mainly simple-folk songs).
It's great that you can play Stand By Me without looking at the fretboard, but it is not essential to adapting to sing and play!
The key thing is to adapt to doing both simultaneously, which requires timing. It's no longer doing two things, its just one act of singing and playing.
I wish I had the time to elaborate for Stand By Me exactly, but just imagine it like Guitar Hero. The bass notes AND lyrics are coming at you at the exact same time. When a song is new to you, you learn it note by note, only advancing once you've got the riff down. The same exact process needs to happen with singing and playing, except its no longer just notes, you're singing too!
In short, you have to take the notes and words in the same timing, just different layers. Start slow, and gradually make your way up to normal speed.
Hope this helps, if you have more questions I can try and better clarify!
Cheers,
Garth
