what part of the string to strum? Empty what part of the string to strum?

Post  zsquad Tue Jan 26, 2010 4:06 am

i've been playing bass for a few months now and, even though this may sound like a really stupid question, i really want to know the answer cuz i think i've been playing wrong all this time. when you strum with your fingers, do your fingers come up into your strumming hand's palm? or into the string behind it (like if you strum the A string, your fingers will run into the E string)? my fingers have been coming up this whole time. while i know i'm not plucking the strings like in slap and pop, every now and then ill strum and it will sound like i plucked it a little bit, and i've seen many bassists finger strum where it looks like they strum and their fingers go straight back to the string behind rather than back and a little up towards the hand. anything helps. thanks!

It seems (to me atleast) that the trick is to 'roll' your fingerpads over the string and then rest them on the next string. If your technique produces good results, however, I see no reason for changing.

I'd say try not to play this way if you can help it simply because if your finger are coming up into your palm then you're going to have issues when trying to get faster. But with that said Jamerson played using his index finger only so there are no universal rules reallly Smile whatever works for you (so long as it's comfortable) is fine man.

Well, the best option is to have your finger stop on the next string. Not only for speed and muting purposes, but this movement will eventually evolve your plucking to a more refined level, which will also refine your tone.
