SOTF: Motown/Soul!
SOTF? What?!?!
Songs of the Fortnight - the new SOTW!
I've decided that I'd try things a little differently now, to try and cater for more skill levels, techniques, and genres.... I'll rotate between genres, and pick a few songs from each that'll cover different skill levels, and hopefully a few different techniques too.
To start off with, one of my favourite genres to both listen to & play: Motown/Soul!
There are MANY famous bassists arising from this genre... James Jameson (session bassist), Verdine White (Earth, Wind & Fire), Larry Graham (Graham Central Station, Solo career), Nathan Watts (I think it is... Stevie Wonder's bassist ) to name a few.
Lets start with the easy ones:
Beginner:
Stand By Me - Ben E. King:
The Four Tops - Sugar Pie Honey Bunch
Intermediate:
The Supremes - You Can't Hurry Love
I've put this one in intermediate, as you really need to groove with this one, it's got a fairly fast tempo, and there's a couple of slightly tricky bits in it
Jackson Five - ABC
Advanced:
Jackson Five - I Wan't You Back
Really gotta groove with this one...
Barry White - You're The First, My Last, My Everything
Enjoy! Let's see a few responses guys...

Re: SOTF: Motown/Soul!
Hmm... Beginner ones would be no sweat (i suppose that's why they call them beginner songs) but the other four (well dunno about the supremes one 'cause I can't hear the bass with these rubbish laptop speakers) would be a challenge for me... Goddamnit I need a decent camera.

SOTF: Motown/Soul!
Yay, I can actually record a cover for this
What to go for though, I think I may challenge myself and go for Jackson 5- I want you back. Its probably my favourite one out of all six.
Should post the cover in a few days

Is "I Want You Back" In G# Major? at least to begin with? trying to tab these ones out by ear, to sharpen my hearing.

Re: SOTF: Motown/Soul!
thats a nice cover there
just a few tips in terms of actually recording
the actually sound of your bass seems quite muddy to me.
that is usually because the sound card is not designed for the low frequencies
if you just turn down the bass and boost the mid slightly on your eq/amp then the sound coming from your bass should be a lot clearer to hear
your playing was nice tho
i would +1 you but i cant so meh

SOTF: Motown/Soul!
Yeah, I played it on VLC media player and played about with the effects and also made it lighter but it didnt transfer onto YT
I may re-record in the daytime, much easier that way.

SOTF: Motown/Soul!
Just a digital camera, suprisingly good quality when its played off speakers, and my room has good acoustics

Re: SOTF: Motown/Soul!
Hey guys
I'm new to the forums, but I've been lurking here for a while. I'm a huge fan of the SOTW, so I tried some of the easier songs of SOTF.
I recently learned "Stand by me", so here it is:

Thanks
That bass is pretty old, it's a Johnson bass. Never heard of that brand before. Yesterday I got my new Ibanez I'll try to cover another song with it.

Oh we havent got the same bass then, mines an Ibanez, thought it was the same..
And I asume the next SOTF is a fortnight after this one started although its been a fortnight
Also, if your cover isnt of one of the songs posted by Smaz, post it in the "Your Youtube videos" thread

Sorry, been very busy recently - starting a new job next week, and preparing for that. Plus have a visitor at the moment! So I'll get one done soon
