Hi Dman and friends,

I really want to learn bass. I love your site with the lesson tree and all. I will be making the most of it.

I have sampled a few models within my budget.

The Epiphone EB3, Yamaha RBX374 and Ibanez SR300, 300F & M.

I am beginner. I simply cannot make a decision.

I welcome any advice. Thanks

Xris

The ibby sr300 is an amazing bass. I use it, and its one of the best basses Ive played under $1000. I love it with all my heart and it, once again, is amazing. I would go for it. The 300F is a fretless, so I would say no to that as a beginner. Unless you meant 300FM which is no different to the 300 except for the Flame Maple finish. Which is awesome I think.

EDIT : The only downside is that the pickups are harder to anchor your finger on. But this is only a problem for the first day or so till you get used to it.

The Yamaha RBX374 is an alright bass, I think Smax uses one. Its a fairly good bass. Ask him. SuperMaximo.

The Epiphone EB3 I didn't like. Mostly for aesthetics, I don't think the SG type body suits a bass. And I've never really been into Epiphone either, So nevermind me.

Thats my thoughts.

PS. I love my SR300. Its amazing.

I use a Fender Jazz bass (not the one pictured but a sunburst one)... I've never played a Yamaha in my life lol!

But I agree any Ibanez with 'SR' somewhere in its name is bound to be good, especially for beginners. The Epiphone EB-3 may be too heavy and cumbersome. Ibanez basses tend to be sleek and very easy to play

Welcome to the forum btw! Smile

The dude who runs me local music shop says that Ibanez used to be good, but nowadays a £500 Ibanez bass (for example), if you took the brand name off, would be a £200 bass. I dunno if I believe him, he's spent a long time in the industry (played with a few underground punk bands yeeeeeeeears ago) but what he says is the exact opposite to what everyone on this forum including Dman himself says...

Still, of course even if what he says is true, Ibanez remains an excellent starting point for playing bass.

You will definatly not be disapointed with the Ibanez. I essentially have that bass with different electronics in it and it is absolutely amazing.

My bass could use a fret leveling tho. Im getting fretbuzz at the 14th frett

For an amp, go with at least 25 watts, otherwise its a pretty shitty pratice amp.
don't forget a cable... you need it to connect the amp to the bass, and they are not usually included.

That should be all you need, nothing fancy, just a bass and an amp to play. The cables cheep anyway.
