Stuck between two
Which bass do you guys think is better for a modern style of punk (NOT greenday style, they suck)
A Fender Standard Precision Bass or a Sterling Ray34

Getting a new bass already?
I can't say I know too much about both of them, but (even though I would go with the Sterling) I think I've heard a lot about precision basses being great for rock/punk and would say go with that.

Re: Stuck between two
Ray all the way!! I LOVE my sterling. I don't know about punk but its a mean bastard for metal, so go for the Sterling.

Re: Stuck between two
Recently a friend of mine aquired a cheap fender p-bass knockoff for about $100. It plays beautifully and I love its simplicity. I reckon if you want to go for punk then a p-bass is the way forward. However if you want to be a little more flexible deffinately get the ray^^

Re: Stuck between two
If you want to play punk you'd best just get the cheapest, most worn off second hand plank you can get and cover the body with stickers. Change parts when it starts to get unplayable and you've got the perfect punkbass.

Re: Stuck between two
Also you need an 80:20 clothes to metal ratio in your appearance. Pins, chains, metal studs... all of that. Your hair should be: at least three different colours, in a very, very odd style, or both. You should adopt an East London accent and shout "OI!" every few minutes for no apparent reason. Research the policies of Margaret Thatcher extensively and compare her stint as PM to the Third Reich at least twice per album.
That should do it, I think. Modern? Nope. Bollocks to that.

to be honest, apart from Angelic Upstart and the like, Oi is probably one of the least political subgenres of Punk.

Re: Stuck between two
Lol, Angelic Upstarts were exactly who I had in mind for most of that post

Re: Stuck between two
I thought so. But most major Oi band are A-political, pretty much.

Re: Stuck between two
Why have I never heard of them? They're great, looks like I got a new band to download!

Really?
They never were one of my favourite Oi! bands, I prefer Cock Sparrer or Slaughter+Dogs and the like, the more cheerful stuff.

Last Night Another Soldier is one of my all-time favourite songs.

Re: Stuck between two
I don't know if I agree with anything to do with the economic side of the political spectrum because I only have a very basic knowledge of communism (even less of the different forms of it) and capitalism (don't even know if it has different forms). I only really pay attention to the social side of the political spectrum; an example of this is Last Night Another Soldier. "Bar charts, facts and figures on your TV screen... another child and another soldier."

Re: Stuck between two
Just grab a Rickenbacker 4001, they're boss. Slap some left-wing stickers on it and slam it into the floor/pavement a few times, and you're there.

Re: Stuck between two
You guys went waaaaay off-topic and it wasn't my fault, wow!
Now from what I've heard (not personally tried) I know that a Sterling, with it's humbucker, gets a more fat and thumpy sound ala Flea.
On the other hand I know that Precision basses get more growl. If you play with a pick, I would suggest that for a more aggressive tone.
I would second the Rickenbacker, though. I've heard a picked Rick' and it sounded really punky Not sure where the barrier between modern and old-school punk is though, but I'm assuming the bass needs to growl :S

Nah, you can't play punk with an actual Rickenbacker, it has to be a Rickenfaker and preferably a cheap one.

Re: Stuck between two
I'd disagree with that. You can play punk just fine with a Rick; you just can't really and truly be punk with one, being all snobby about it

Re: Stuck between two
Here's some dude picking a Rick:
So, anyone feel like stopping by the chatterbox thingy?
