Small hand stubby fingers Empty Small hand stubby fingers

Post  caliburn50 Thu Feb 04, 2010 9:53 pm

Hellllllp anyone got some thoughts on playing style for a newbie bass player who has arthritic hands and stubby fingers. I struglle to span the frets and only manage about one and a half frets.

So any ideas would be welcomed but not give up playing Cool

Regards

well the way i see it it is just practice
when i started playing i was struggeling to stretch 2-3 frets and now i can do about 4
also dmans tendon exercises should do you a lot of good in this case i believe

https://freebasslessons.forumotion.com/all-the-bass-lessons-f1/hand-and-tendon-excercises-video-t7.htm

do what he says in the vid and you will soon see an improvement i believe
however it is worth waiting for stryfers answer as he probably knows more than me about this subject

I guess heating up your hands before playing would help with the arthritis.

Other than that... streching your hands and fingers before and after playing and practise..

but the heat will defo help with the joints and muscles Smile *but you prolly know that aready*

You could try a short scale bass

I think stubby fingers shouldn't be too much of a problem, unless they are really really stubby :S
Like everyone said, practice and stretch.
If you still have problems, a short scale bass. Although I don't know much about this, I've seen specs for basses with "Jumbo frets", perhaps there are basses with smaller frets too.
If you manage to get your hand across 3 frets, that should be enough to play anything with minimal movement.
You could just lay your bass down, open up your hand completely with fingers spread out as wide as possible and place the hand on the fretboard of the bass. No thumb folding, just lay your hand flat on top of the fretboard, this will show you about how much you will be able to cover in the end with proper stretch exercise. Of course it is also possible to go beyond that limit, but playing too long with your hand stretched out too much can get very painful.

I also have short stubby fingers which is annoying....
practice has helped my stretch dramatically. just have to increase my finger strength and work on the warm ups.

Or you could have a custom bass made for you; or if you are good with wood, maybe even go crazy and try and design one of your own.

Or maybe keep the body of the bass you already have and get a short scale neck from ebay or somewhere and swap necks.
