i think it wouldnt cost that much to just modify a normal ukulele and put them strings on it

i think they must be specially made strings just for that instrument

That makes the thing worse... you shouldn't want to try slap and pop alot, i sure as hell wouldn't want to risk it snaping a string and it'd be a punch to your wallets gut everytime to wanted to replace the strings due to age.
Cool sound, but the idea of owning one seems to, well suck.

The strings look suspiciously like the latex ones used on the Ashbory Bass to me!

The De'Armond set for the Ashbory are about £16 squids.
