How are they connected? If it just fits over a little screw type thing that you can still turn by hand, just super glue them back on (make sure they're oriented the right way.)

I don't want to superglue in case I need it taken off to get the the scratch plate, because I'm thinking of getting it refinished to mend the dents and repaint it.

and what screw?

I suppose it is a screw thing. I can turn it by hand.

If you don't want to super glue it, come up with some alternative, temporary method.. because I can't think of one off hand that would be anywhere near practical.

blu tak solves everythin

take a small piece of blu tak and stick on the end of the stick that sticks out the scratch plate.
put ur tuning knob back on and see if that works

The control that it turns does it have a split shaft like the one in the image below?

If so then take a flat screwdriver and carefully prise apart the the metal shafts then the knob will stay on.
