Jazz or Precision
Ok. So ive been looking for a new bass and what i realy wanted to do was buy a P-bass but im not too sure. Could anyone tell me the difference between the two and recomend some P-basses?

Re: Jazz or Precision
Not exactly sure, but from what I've heard a Jazz bass is better for slapping than a P-bass.
Recomendations depend on the type of music you play, but I know Steve Harris from Iron Maiden has a signature P-bass, so I assume its a more rock-metal type of design.
But lets hear from someone who has actualy played both XD

Re: Jazz or Precision
I wont give the long version of the difference but the short one. I think smaz wrote a big article description on the subject before. The important difference between a jazz bass (at least to me) and a P bass is the tone you can achieve from it. A jazz bass allows for a greater flexibility in terms of how you can shape your tone, a P bass not so much, however in saying that the P bass has an AMAZING tone. There are other differences but I won't go into it. Personally I'd go for the jazz bass as I like shaping my own tone.

I've got an American '08 P-bass, and I love it... I've also got a Mexican Jazz, and love that one too.... My opinion? Get both

Re: Jazz or Precision
well it would help greatly if you told us:
1. what style of music you play/interested in
2. bassists tone that you like (judging from your display picture flea?)
3. what bass you are specifically looking at (squire, fender, copy etc.)
4. What amp you are specifically looking at, you shoul;d be able to find some stuff online about it
5. Do you play in a band/plan to in the immediate future (will determine if the amp is a worthwhile purchase)
6. What gear do you currently have
7. What's the budget, assuming from the amp around 400 pounds (i don't have pound key on my keyboard)
If you can give us that info it will make it a lot easier to help you
I'll get back to you as soon as i can
hope this helps

Cheers man I'm hoping to play both but there aren't any stores within traveling distance that have the active p and jazz bass in stock I may just have to play a standard and then order the active equivalent

Re: Jazz or Precision
I have a squir P bass with the bridge J pickup.
so you can make it a P bass or kind of a hybrid but you dont get the neck pickup.

Re: Jazz or Precision
well if you already have the jazz bass then why not go for the p-bass equivalent.
also (i dont want to make your choice even harder) i think max posted something about a sterling by musicman ray 34 (i think)
apparently its a cheaper version of the stingray and seeing as you like flea that might be worth a try
http://www.google.co.uk/products?q=musicman+sterling+ray+34&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=BM8WS-_NEoOl4Qb0-bjcBg&sa=X&oi=product_result_group&ct=title&resnum=5&ved=0CDEQrQQwBA
according to google you can pick one of them up for 600 quid (thereabouts)

Re: Jazz or Precision
It wasn't me who said that... Well I did say that I tried one and they are very good basses! If you like Flea then you should definitely get one if you can't afford one (new or used, used is £800, a steal!).
...And wow. I thought Sterlings were like £800 new?!?! At £600, you should definitely buy one man

that was me, me thinks. Yea I have fallen deeply in love with that bass. I always wanted to get a jazz bass but I've changed my mind after playing the sterling, we were made for each other lol. Im breaking the bank and getting one before Christmas.
