I'd certainly go for an acoustic bass.
Why all this hostility to it?
The double bass is acoustic, why don't you attack on it with a sledgehammer too?
Give me a break, acoustic fretted or not can give some really cool sounds PLUS you can always take it with you and practice away from home without having the 10 kilos AMP with you.
