Well as the title says can any one tell me me the process of getting a bass de-fretted such as what it involves. Like I know you have to have the neck coated in something?

Cheers for any advice!

I think the main thing with defretting is removing the frets without damaging the fretboard. You will need to heat up the each fret first as they are usually glued in. You need to melt the glue first otherwise you will pull off big chunks of the fretboard. you also a need a decent good quality set of fret pliers.

Once the frets are out there are 3 options.
1 - leave the open fret slots
2 - fill the fretslots with some thin laminate / veneer wood
3 - fill the fretslots with epoxy or woodfiller

To finish some use layers of superglue (sanding between each layer) or some use some clear epoxy. If its a popular bass guitar I would suggest looking for a fretless neck on ebay then you can swap them whenever you want
