Re: Puzzles! (by Spoon)
common sense. try and solve it for a smaller group then apply the same method to the whole puzzle

So who leaves and on what day, then?Spoon wrote:common sense. try and solve it for a smaller group then apply the same method to the whole puzzle

Re: Puzzles! (by Spoon)
I think so.
anyway an easier puzzle:
A high school has a some what strange headmaster. On the first day, he has his students perform an odd opening day ceremony:
There are one thousand lockers and one thousand pupils in the school. The headmaster asks the first pupil to go to every locker and open it. Then he has the second student go to every second locker and close it. The third goes to every third locker and, if it is closed, he opens it, and if it is open, he closes it. The fourth pupil does this to every fourth locker, and so on. After the process is completed with the thousandth pupil, how many lockers are open?
PS: max got it again (your annoying you know that)

- Spoiler:
- 4?
taking 10 lockers... every one is opened so its o o o o o o o o o o
then if the person opens every second its o x o x o x o x o x
then if the next closes every 4th if its open or opens it if its shut o x o o o x o o o x
then the next every 5th. o x o o x x o o o o
10th o x o o x o x x x x

- Spoiler:
- The answer for the 1st 10 lockers should look like this:
1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-0
o-c-c-o-c--c-c-c-o-c

Going with the method "solve for a smaller group, then extrapolate" here.
6 students
c-c-c-c-c-c (Start) 0 open, 6 closed
o-o-o-o-o-o (First) 6 open, 0 closed
o-c-o-c-o-c (Second) 3 open, 3 closed
o-c-c-c-o-o (Third) 3 open, 3 closed
o-c-c-o-o-o (Fourth) 4 open, 2 closed
o-c-c-o-c-o (Fifth) 3 open, 3 closed
o-c-c-o-c-c (Sixth) 2 open, 4 closed
10 students:
c-c-c-c-c-c-c-c-c-c (Start) 0 open, 10 closed
o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o (First) 10 open, 0 closed
o-c-o-c-o-c-o-c-o-c (Second) 5 open, 5 closed
o-c-c-c-o-o-o-c-c-c (Third) 4 open, 6 closed
o-c-c-o-o-o-o-o-c-c (Fourth) 6 open, 4 closed
o-c-c-o-c-o-o-o-c-o (Fifth) 6 open, 4 closed
o-c-c-o-c-c-o-o-c-o (Sixth) 5 open, 5 closed
o-c-c-o-c-c-c-o-c-o (Seventh) 4 open, 6 closed
o-c-c-o-c-c-o-o-c-o (Eigth) 5 open, 5 closed
o-c-c-o-c-c-o-o-o-o (Ninth) 6 open, 4 closed
o-c-c-o-c-c-o-o-o-c (Tenth) 5 open, 5 closed
At half, the division seems 500-500, so I'm going to go with that. After number 500, every open after 500 becomes a close and vice versa. So: 500 open, 500 closed?
I could also bruteforce this on my computer. xD

Re: Puzzles! (by Spoon)
i think we should all break out our programming skills and see if we can solve this problem using java/C++/pascal etc.

Re: Puzzles! (by Spoon)
I think Python would be sufficient. Just use a list and a loop to manipulate the list...maxf13 wrote:i think we should all break out our programming skills and see if we can solve this problem using java/C++/pascal etc.
