exercise suggestion
Well as some of you have figured out, i started trying to play bass by ear yesterday. Trying gave me an idea for a exercise.
This is my exercise suggestion:
Someone (Dman, Smaz, any one who knows bass well) can record them playing 1 note or a couple notes and some one else (those trying to play by ear) will try to replicate it. (but its only a recording so you cant see what their playing, you can only hear it)
and whoever decides to do the recordings can eventually record more difficult things as time passes.
when someone replicates a recording they could PM the "teacher" with how they replicated the recording(s) (as in what they played) and see if they're right, if they're not right then the "teacher" will tell them what part they did wrong but not tell them the correct note.
and so on and on..........

Re: exercise suggestion
Yea, I definitely need practice learning by ear,so hopefully someone can do this.
Edit:And maybe have them use some amp distortions to make it a bit more difficult?
Also, why is there so much empty space underneath all my posts??????????

Re: exercise suggestion
Yep! I went to Manson's Guitars in Exeter and the bass section was really big, loads of stuff to try out. The staff were uber friendly too I tried out some amps and have decided to go with a TC Electronic BG500 115 combo. It's about £570, but its 500w of epic win The staff there were raving about it and I can see why! The basses I tried were the Geddy Lee jazz in the picture, a Squier fretless jazz and a Rickenbacker (XD). The Rick was pretty good but a bit to trebley for my tastes. I wouldn't pay £1500 for it.

Re: exercise suggestion
I could have sworn I wrote a reply to this thread :S
Anyway, let's try again...
My idea: Playing a few notes for you guys to work out would be a bit boring - it would only appeal to anyone looking at learning to play by ear for the first time, and wouldn't be very practical.
So I thought... How about playing basslines at normal speed, slow speed, and just the notes used only? That way you can learn to play in a practical situation, and work on a recording based on your skill level. If you're just starting out, you can listen to the notes played to work out what notes you need, then listen to the half speed version and work out what order the notes are in, how the riff goes, then finally play it at full speed once you get the hang of it. Or, if you're already good enough at learning to play by ear, you can just go from the normal speed recordings, to give yourself a challenge.
Your thoughts?

Re: exercise suggestion
i was thinking about having three sections: beginner, intermediate, and pro. or easy, medium, and hard (something like that)
and in each on have maybe 5 riffs that you can figure out, and obviously each "level" would be harder so its more of a challenge for some people

If I understood well, we get a line, and we play it normal or fast or slow depending on our level and skill?
OR we get a bassline and we start slowly and then fast till our fingaz melt?
