SOTW 1: Classic Rock!
Ladies, gentlemen, all in-between: grab your basses and assume your greatest bass-faces because Songs of the Week is here at last!
Classic Rock, then. What is 'Classic Rock'? It's debatable, but I know it as 'anything that wouldn't seem out of place on classic rock radio'. An umbrella genre. The Kinks aren't much like The Who, who aren't much like AC/DC, who aren't much like The Beatles, who aren't much like Guns n' Roses. Many brilliant bassists played what we now deem 'Classic Rock' - Sir Paul McCartney, the peerless John Entwistle, John Deacon, Roger Glover... the list goes on.
Remember, if you can't quite match the song note-for-note, don't worry about it. Just do your best, and practice.
Beginner:
Survivor - Eye of the Tiger
Watch your timing in the intro, and watch out for those tricky little fills. If you can't do them, that's fine. Practice, practice!
Tab
Playalong - As you see, you don't have to be 100% faithful to the original bass track. Mess around, have fun, be creative!
The Beatles - Come Together
Dman has a lesson for this song.
Tab - Another way to play it.
Playalong
Intermediate:
Led Zeppelin - Dazed and Confused
The first half of the song, no sweat, but it takes stamina to get through the second half.
Tab? No tab. Try to work it out from the other playalong and/or by ear from the original bass track. This is definitely an effort to help you all improve as musicians and not just my own laziness. Honestly. Yep. 'Course, if you really want the tabs, you can look for them yourself, I suppose...
Playalong
Boston - Peace of Mind
Fills, fills, fills!
Playalong
Advanced:
The Who - My Generation
Pretty simple... if you ignore those lil' bass solos. Good lord. Thunderfingers indeed.
Playalong
Deep Purple - Highway Star
The intro always reminds me of Spyro the Dragon for some reason. Anyway, this one has a very quick pace and requires a lot of stamina to get through.
Playalong
BONUS DMAN SONG
Dman's latest lessons will feature here as lovely bonus, regardless of genre. Our first BONUS DMAN SONG is Hurt. This uses techniques discussed in his bass book. A few of them can be employed to some of the songs up there as well; you could use three fingers in Highway Star and My Generation, you could turn some of the notes in Come Together into a little power chord and downstroke them... Entirely up to you.
Nine Inch Nails, Johnny Cash
Who wants the honour of the first SOTW playalong?

Re: SOTW 1: Classic Rock!
Damn good selections. Highway Star is my choice. Give me a hot minute to figure out the bazz/video recording and I'm on it.

Re: SOTW 1: Classic Rock!
I already have an old studio version of Come Together somewhere that me and some people did for a guy's project.
I'll do one of the others too, I guess. Time to buy a webcam.

Re: SOTW 1: Classic Rock!
Finally done it.
Not easy, this.
Trying to put my Korg over me recording the song. Bloody complicated!
Managed to 'kinda' get it ok. It only comes out of one speaker, though. Oh, and it distorts because it's too loud. Oh, and it's out of sync.
I hit some dud notes and go out of time as well, lol.
But, its uploading now. It's just for fun, right?

Re: SOTW 1: Classic Rock!
I'm getting around to it. It's been ages since I actually sat and learned a song.

Re: SOTW 1: Classic Rock!
Next one's coming tomorrow. This one'll probably be moved to 'Learn to play'. Everyone of course is still welcome (NAY, ENCOURAGED) to post covers in this one.

Re: SOTW 1: Classic Rock!
This video is severely fucked, but the bass is what's important.
Any ideas on how to fix this?
Also if you're reading within 50 minutes of this post, then it's not live yet.

Re: SOTW 1: Classic Rock!
Nice! I do love me those solos. No suggestions on the video problem though, I'm afraid. Though, as you said, it's the bass that matters

Re: SOTW 1: Classic Rock!
Very nice man!
Yea, those solos can be a PAIN. Pulled them off brilliantly!
