SOTW 2: Punk!

"Bollocks is legal! Bollocks, bollocks, bollocks!"

John Lydon said something like that to the media after the Pistols won the right to name (or keep naming, I forget which) their album Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols. Nowadays he sells butter.

Anyway, you're going to want to use a pick for all this. You could use an Entwistle-like three finger style, but, let's face it, picks are better for punk. In general. Please don't hurt me.

Beginner:
Ramones - Blitzkrieg Bop

A, D and E. Those are all the notes you need. Open A string, 5th fret on the A string, 7th fret on the A string. Use a pick, because it's difficult to keep that speed up with fingers - go to Dman's pick lessons if you're not a picky type. He'll set you straight.

Stiff Little Fingers - Roots, Radicals, Rockers and Reggae

Tabs aren't needed. You don't need to follow the bassline perfectly. Follow the guitars. The guitar is just using two chords - G and D (3rd fret on E, 5th fret on A). Play them in the same rhythm, all the way through the song. Improvise a little when the fancy takes you.

Intermediate:

This is a cracking song. It may not be a TYPICAL punk song, but it's definitely a punk song.

Indeed it does. And The Clash aren't the only punk band that's ever graced this fine green Earth, and this isn't the only SOTW we'll have that focuses on punk. 52 weeks in the year, only so many genres!

In fact, I'm not certain what to put for the next genre. I want to do metal, but if my choices for the first batch of punk songs are met with this opposition, my metal ones are likely going to cause you all to haemorrhage violently from your eyes. Grunge, perhaps. Grunge is safe.

Meh, Metal is quite broad...but I would suggest to stick with classics as far as that goes. Metallica, Iron Maiden and what not. Classics are always safe

so long as there are no limp bizdick and linkin pork I'm sure your choices will be fine. Get some death metal in there, see if anyone can play frantic disembowelment by Cannibal Corpse without their fingers falling off ha ha.

Oh good gracious lord I wasn't planning on putting them in there. No no no sirree. But nah, I'm sticking with grunge, because it's easier (my down with the sickness thread will explain why easiness is a bonus this week).

Best get learning, then... I'm gonna include that as part of next week's SOTW, gonna call it 'Assorted Metals'

I've established I don't really have enough time to do even the easy SotW songs so I doubt I'll actually do that one. But if I do, it'll take much more than a week, I'm sure.

My stereotype sense is telling me I should try the next one.

I'd never heard that Bad Religion song before, it is nice.
