Need information on amps

Okay so. Is it possible to use a head that is a higher wattage then the cab? Will it just not go as loud or will it blow up or what?

EDIT : For instance, a 500w head on a 400w cab

Yes. Just make sure you don't crank the head! A head will only output it's maximum wattage when at full volume. Make sure you listen to your cab closely if you match it up with a higher wattage head; if it's distorting at all, turn down, or you'll ruin your cab.

Also bear in mind that if you're using an 8ohm cab with a 4ohm head (through a 8ohm output, I hope), you'll only be getting approximately half the maximum power of the head. Eg. 500W head at 4ohms will give ~250W (probably around 300W, depends on the head) to a 8ohm cab

okay, with the ohms thing, will that affect tone at all or just volume?
