Re: bass play with fingers
You can do many things regarding playing with fingers:
You can anchor your thumb on the string above the one you're playing and move it around when changing strings (I do this)
You can anchor your thumb on the string but not anchor below a certain string (usually A) and reach down with your fingers
You can anchor your thumb on the pickup and reach down with your fingers
You can not anchor at all (this lets you play with you thumb as well).
You can do something else
Just do whatever feels most comfortable and natural and practice, practice, practice! Good luck

Re: bass play with fingers
Hey man don't forget that playing with a pick is alright.
There are some very good bass players who use a pick, and even some who tend to use fingers use a pick sometimes too.
It's always good to learn both, but don't give up on your picking.
Also, I suggest anchoring your thumb on the pickup, and if you cant reach as well for the g string, anchor it on the E string.
Good luck!

Re: bass play with fingers
Yeah that's fine. It could be both your technique and your bass but as long as it doesn't come out of the amp, who cares? Only you can hear it! But if the buzzing is a problem just try lifting your fingers off the strings a bit quicker or mute them before hand (unless you're doing a pulloff, of course)

Re: bass play with fingers
I play with my thumb on the pickup, then just stretch my fingers down to each of the strings.
I can play much faster than having to keep moving my thumb all over the place and it helps me know where I am.
