Bassists and weak ears
I had a convo the other day about people who we know (plain ppl) in our party and everyone who had one weak ear, it turned out that was a bassist.
So how coincidence is that?!
My one ear is also weak 6 months after I started playing.
WTFence?

Y'know, I think my hearing's going down the swanny as well. Might have something to do with the fact that I only really play bass with headphones on.

I always thought that I will lose some of my hearing because of guitar soloing in my ear!
I thought the bass frequency isnt that loud to damage an ear!
I will never use headphones again. lol
Do you have problem on both of your ears?

Re: Bassists and weak ears
Kinda. It's not really a problem. I've just been noticing that, for example, I need my mp3 player's volume to be on 26 instead of 23 now. Little things like that.

What can I say... hope someone will reply who will have a 100% answer...

Re: Bassists and weak ears
Pip, I think it might just be you getting used to the volume. If your senses are exposed to something for a long time, they get used to it and don't react to the stimulus anymore. An example of this is wearing clothes. Usually, you don't feel them, even though they are there. This is because you've been wearing clothes since you were little.
Might have something to do with that. Or we could just be blowing our ears. >.<

Re: Bassists and weak ears
Urrgg, some of the gigs we used to do. Unbelievably loud.
I was at a friends once, and was late for band practice. We got into the car, and could hear the guys practicing in the shed. Could hear lyrics and everything.
That was over two miles away.
Now, I constantly have a 'weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!' going on in my ears. It's annoying, especially when its silent. Its all I can hear.
Everyone in my new band has earplugs. I really need to get some.
Both my ears are weak, lol.

I really couldn't stand that ringing every day. I plan on wearing earplugs to every show I go to from now on because the last show I went to had em ringing for 2 or 3 days straight.

Re: Bassists and weak ears
I get that sound as well! Only when it's silent or when someone mentions it (yeah cheers for that ) but still.
Yeah, you're probably right TLS. I was thinking about this when out and about earlier and remembered how some people who live in the country can't take the noise of the big city, whereas those who live in the city don't really notice the noise. What I find funny is when you record ambient noise in familiar surroundings; you always notice things that normally just get filtered out of the sensory memory as soon as they reach your ears.

The peep is called tinnitus. (Your own private peep show! )
If you hear peep, it's bad. It doesn't mean you're getting used to it, it means that stuff is being destroyed inside your ear.

Re: Bassists and weak ears
If you have it you can always do what Pete Townshend did.
Blame it on Keith Moon.

Re: Bassists and weak ears
I thought he blamed it on using headphones when recording?
Oh btw Dman, I reckon you should do a video on tinnitus or hearing damage in general. You do a good job of drilling in the importance of stretching and starting new techniques etc. slowly... perhaps you could save a few people from hearing damage as well as saving them from RSIs

Re: Bassists and weak ears
If it's occasional then it's probably just you occasionally hearing a really loud noise.

Re: Bassists and weak ears
or maybe you heard a bird (funny-fail). Anyways ive also noticed that its a little harder to hear now, i think my problem is more along the line of my ears are getting used to the volume of my bass and stuff.
