Self taught bassists

Alright,it was about time.Do you know any great good self taught bassists?

I know paul grey,don't like his way of playing byt he's good.
Also john myung,which actually learnt bass alone before he went to berklee

ME, no actually im kinda **** so no not really. I mean I may know some but IDcare if they had a teacher or not if they sound good.

I believe our very own Dman is self taught. As for more famous bass players, I know John Paul Jones is self taught, although he had classical training before hand. Paul McCartney is self taught. I'm sure there are loads of others.

I had lessons when I was younger but not for that long and I pretty much taught myself after that. But I don't think that anyone is really self taught as you learn from others by listening to other bassists. So in a way all the bassists you admire and try to copy by learning their songs are your teachers.

The only one that springs to mind is Les Claypool

Yea, i've never had a lesson.

I kinda like that, because it's given me my own "way" and sound if you can see what I mean?

But at the same time, if I had a teacher, I could have achieved a lot of other things a lot quicker.

It's a coin with two sides.

Ryan Martinie never really says anything about himself, ever.

But he had classical training, but as far as information on that goes, it was supposedly for vocals.

At 12 he got a bass and started learning metallica songs by ear..

But thats when the timeline dies.


Born > Classical Training > Bass By Ear > ??? > Profit.


He's actually become so mysterious that theres a competition on and the winner gets to ask 5-10 questions

But at the same time, the winner is chosen by Martinie, by the questions that they want to ask..

I mean bassists that did not actually went to a teacher to give them the knowledge.They kind of way,did it themselves without having someone in front of them showing them what to do.

The only littelary self taught bassist,or guy who played stringed organ ,was the crazy guy that decided thousands years ago to put a horses tail hairs,on a wooden stick.

I've had one lesson, so i'm out. ptooie! Eff lessons anyway.

Basically you must've learnt many thing by your own right?

Well I've never had a teacher... but I kind of suck. Maybe I should get a teacher...

I'll be your teacher 600 bucks an hour and you have to fly over to Ireland every week. 3 minute lesson.
