So I'm buying my first bass... Empty So I'm buying my first bass...

Post  Goron1991 Sun Dec 20, 2009 3:57 am

Greetings guys and gals, I want to start by introducing myself. You can all call me Goron (easier to type than Goron1991, after all). I have a musical a background of about 7 years playing tuba (boo-yeah) for my high school's concert/marching band (not as lame as it sounds. Third in the nation in class A, BAM!). I can already read both bass cleft and tabs (taught myself how to read tabs today, easier than I expected, lol) and now I'm looking into buying my first bass.

The bass I'm looking at is a Dean Zone XM Bass Guitar. My local (or at least as close to local as it can be) guitar center has them in stock, and think it is a pretty good deal, considering that it is a Dean guitar of course. I know it's not exactly a high end bass from Dean, but I just want some of your opinions on the matter.

Thanks, peace, and happy holidays!

Firstly and unfortunately, this forum is more heavy on the guys side than the gals. Secondly, Welcome and don't be a stranger. Thirdly, I didn't know Dean made high end basses. lol! Probably a good entry-level selection. Have you played it? If so, then if it felt nice and easy to play, then go for it.

Please, just becasue I'm in a concert and doesn't mean I'm not a metal head Razz lol.

Though lately I've been listening to a lot of acoustic, I tend to listen to stuff like Bring Me the Horizon.

When I was talking to my older brother about buying my bass, he said the same thing about the "play it first, then decide." As a musician in a home full of musicians, I already know that much and agree, wholeheartedly.

My bro used to be in the band Sinking the Nautilus. Here's an exert from their song, Bayou Vermin https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_Jf7TU4_08&feature=related. They sound MUCH better in person btw. Their vocalist is pretty insane in terms of his vocal range as well. My brother is the lead guitar (the dork in the glasses).

Peace

edit: lol, just caught what you said about Dean basses. I'm going off the "What can I get for cheap that's decent" philosophy right now.

Hey, you can call me Spyro.
The only thing i can think of saying here is do you know the difference between a P-bass and a Jazz bass?

The post your looking for is the third one, by Smaz.

Welcome! Smile

For $100, I don't think you can go wrong Smile As long as you've played it, and it feels comfortable to you then that's all you need. My first bass was a Stagg BC300 (Link) - I bought it for £60 second hand off my mate. I still have it, 7 years on, and still like to play it every now & again Smile

Do let us know how you get on! And feel free to ask us anything about bass playing, regardless of how simple or stupid it may sound Smile

Cheers!

Thanks for the welcome guys. I'm currently borrowing a friends old bass just so I can learn basic technique before I head to guitar center to find mine. I'm planning on heading over there probably next Wednesday (if possible). Wish me luck! Now, I'm off to do some of DMan's tutorials.

Peace!

~Goron~ cheers

Hello and welcome to the forums, Gory Smile

I don't really have a proper nickname like everyone else. Some call me Pippy. Some call me Pippy Longstockings. But most call me Pip, because it's easiest to write Razz

Welcome u can call me manny, if you havent bought anything you might want to check rondomusic.com really nice P bass and Jazz bass there. There are really good bass that are $120 but are worth 3 times more and play equally if not better than a squire. I just bought one and it plays like a dream. My .02 cents Stay on the low Wink

Thanks guys. I'm currently borrowing a (crappy) bass from a friend of mine. I won't be able to buy mine for a few more weeks. The ditributor cap on my car just happened to melt recently. Toyota Supra parts are expensive.
