Alright so recently I got my brother Fender Mexican Jazz bass, awesome btw, it's just that I've played other basses and preferred the lower gauge strings.

So my question is, could I mess around with my frequencies enough that my tone will be close to the thicker gauge strings? I just find it hard to slap and pop on the fender jazz since it has such a small width in the neck, and I'm thinking smaller gauge strings would do the trick. I just want to keep that low tone since when ever I jam with friends, we always range from really heavy music to nice jazzy jams.

I think I'm just going to have a nice trial and error with bass strings soon Razz

I use GHS 3060 tapewound nylon strings. They have a really classic/warm sound and the since they're tapewound they seem to fret a bit easier. Plus, the nylon seals them so they don't absorb a lot of finger gunk or moisture from the atmosphere (I'm from Michigan and humidity is a major problem), so I haven't seen (or heard) a need to change them since I put them on back in November. The only downside that I've found so far is that violin bows (I should be using a cello bow) have trouble gripping them since they are exceedingly smooth. But in all fairness, I could probably fix that problem with a darker (stickier) rosin.

DAMNIT!!!!!!!
I've been looking for the heavy DR black beauties but couldn't find them on ebay at all.. so i went with the d'addarios.
Just checked ebay then and NOW they're up for a pretty decent price too.
I might sell my other 2 sets of d'addarios here in aus where i can get a fair bit for them and get the black beauties for my next set.

If you're happy with the sound, stick with 'em.
I'd change them if they were really dirty and/or losing their tone.

Give them a wipe after use. I wipe mine with baby wipes and it can help restore some tone. I think what happens is dead skin and oil from your hands can dampen the strings and regular cleaning can help prevent this. But they will wear away after continued use. I have a 3 string bass now, I need to get a new set this weekend.

Yep, it is a very interesting but controversal question I met 2 yrs ago. I took some survey and I found a good reference table but I can't remember where. If you want I could upload here, they are in 7 images, cca. 140 strings to compare categorized by manufacturers. (I don't wanna upload without Dman's consent as they are in 7 full pages)

I was trying a few brands. But for me good one are Rotosound SwingBass and DR.
DR are more expensive, but they really have longer life and great sound.
Usually, I'm changing strings 1 time per month(or 2 month - it depends on gigs, bass using and money:)))

So i picked up my bass this morning and started my usual collection of warmup riffs and notices my strings were as dull as f***.
I'm not sure what else it could be, my bass just sounds crap.. I doubt its my amp.
